A companion on your
path toward healing.
Meet José Gbaba, LPC, founder of Agnus Dei Counseling.

Care grounded in dignity and compassion.
José Gbaba is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Virginia. He earned his Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Divine Mercy University. The program emphasizes the fundamental goodness and dignity of every human person, and the unity between faith, philosophy, and psychology in understanding and treating the whole person. The foundational understanding of the human person as the Imago Dei (image of God) was an impetus for José to enter the counseling profession, as he desired to accompany others on their way towards human flourishing.
As a licensed professional counselor, I have been abundantly blessed to accompany many on their healing journey. I offer holistic care for the whole person using the best evidence-based approaches and counseling modalities, relying on the wisdom of the Catholic faith if the client wishes. If your faith is a resource to you, we’ll bring it into the session. If your faith is struggling, wounded, or not something you hold at all, that’s welcome too. I follow all ethical codes closely, and would never press personal belief on a client.
At Agnus Dei, I am committed to providing a safe, supportive, empathetic, and sacred space where you may unburden your heart and come to a deeper place of healing. I offer a range of services to meet the needs of the client such as individual counseling, couples, premarital counseling, and family therapy. At Agnus Dei, my hope is that you will come to deeper healing in your interpersonal and relational life.
I believe in a holistic view of the human person, one that honors both the spiritual and psychological dimensions of each individual. We welcome all clients, those who are religious and those who are of no faith, and of diverse backgrounds, and are pleased to offer all clients impartial access to treatment. Please know that you will receive sound psychological services utilizing the best evidence-based approaches.
A journey of discernment and service
Before becoming a counselor, I spent several years discerning religious life as a Franciscan friar and seminarian. That experience helped form my life of prayer and my desire to serve others. After discerning out of formation, I found my vocation as a husband and father and sought a way to use my gifts to help others flourish.
My background gives me a particular appreciation for the joys and difficulties of religious life. I have a special interest in working with clergy, religious, seminarians, missionaries, those discerning a vocation, and those finding their next steps after leaving formation.

The meaning of Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei means “Lamb of God.” I chose the name Agnus Dei Counseling and Consulting for my practice in homage to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who took upon Himself our sufferings, pain, and sin. It reflects my hope that counseling can be a place of compassion, healing, and renewed understanding of your worth.
A space where your story matters
Suffering and trauma can often lead us to a distorted understanding of ourselves and our worth, can damage and destroy our relationships, and can increase anxiety, depression, loneliness, and boredom.
At Agnus Dei, I treat relationships and interpersonal dynamics and work with couples, families and individuals, who are looking for meaning and flourishing in their human condition.
Option for faith-integrated counseling
If your faith supports you, we can draw on it in our work. If your faith is struggling, wounded, or absent, that is welcome too. I do not press personal beliefs upon clients. Counseling is tailored to your needs and preferences, grounded in respect for your dignity and autonomy.
A path toward healing. Room to flourish.
You don’t need to have everything figured out. Let’s talk about what brings you here and how I might help.
